Code of conduct

ISTA code of conduct for events
The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) is committed to creating a work environment that is safe, professional and of mutual trust, where diversity and inclusion are valued, and everyone is entitled to be treated with courtesy and respect. ISTA commits to making conferences, workshops, and all associated activities productive and enjoyable for everyone, and it will not tolerate harassment of participants in any form. The general code of conduct to be followed can be found at: https://ist.ac.at/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Code_of_Conduct_English-2024.pdf

In addition, participants are expected to follow these guidelines:

From its beginning, at the first European Workshop on White Dwarfs held in Kiel (Germany) in 1974, the spirit of tolerance, friendship, and respect has characterized these meetings. Such values have been continuously passed on to new generations as one of the greatest achievements of EuroWD. Our community is made up of members from around the globe with a diverse set of skills, ages, personalities, and experiences. It is through these differences that we experience success and continued growth. Therefore, the EuroWD community is proud to promote the values of respect for diversity in its broadest sense and to enhance collaboration and constructive discussion of scientific ideas among all our members.

With this in mind, all attendees are expected to treat all people with respect and to provide a harassment and bullying-free environment, regardless of sex, sexual orientation, and/or gender identity, disability, age, physical appearance, body size, race, nationality, ethnicity, and religion. In particular, sexual language and imagery, sexist, racist, and other exclusionary jokes will not be tolerated. In the same spirit, people outside our community should be treated with the same respect as those within our community.

All discussions between members of the community should be approached with respect for the duration of the meeting and in all activities related to it. Ideas and results must be respectfully discussed based solely on their scientific merits. Personal attacks will not be tolerated. Explicit consent from the speaker must be sought before publishing presentation recordings or video clips on any kind of media or platform (scientific publications, on social media, or on conference websites). Posting (a few) slides (or parts thereof) on social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.) helps promote scientific discussion and is permitted unless the speaker indicates at the beginning of their talk that they are not comfortable with that.

Attendees who witness or are affected by possible violations of the code of conduct should contact Ilaria Caiazzo or Santiago Torres (at ilaria.caiazzo@ist.ac.at or santiago.torres@upc.edu) to initiate a complaint. The complaint will be examined, and action will be taken if it is confirmed that the code has been violated. The SOC and LOC will do their best to ensure that the entire community follows the code of conduct and seek to act accordingly when violations are noted.
